Personal budgets for social care

What are personal budgets? If you are assessed as having eligible social care needs, such as needing help with personal care, help to prepare a meal, mobility needs, support to improve your physical and emotional health and wellbeing, or to maintain important relationships and access social activities, then you may be allocated a Personal Budget.

A Personal Budget is a sum of money that Milton Keynes Council may provide to you to provide services to meet your assessed needs. The actual amount of Personal Budget you receive will be advised once the support you need has been decided and agreed.

For more information, visit the Milton Keynes Council website, or contact Connection Support.

Connection Support helps people who want their Personal Budget as a Direct Payment. We work together to design, choose, and manage their care and support based on their needs. They give information and advice on how to use a Direct Payment. They also help people find and hire their own care staff, such as personal assistants.

They help people understand how to use Direct Payments and their options. They help with finding and hiring a personal assistant and accessing payroll services. They also offer a helpline for any Direct Payment questions or issues. They manage clients’ Direct Payment funds and make payments on their behalf. If you’re thinking about hiring a personal assistant, they provide information and advice. They run a payroll service to calculate wages and taxes for your employees. They also help submit Direct Payment spending reports to the council each quarter.

You can get information and advice about Direct Payments and employment. This is for anyone who receives or is considering using a Direct Payment to hire someone. Your care manager needs to authorise all other services.

Referrals to the service are via your care manager or social worker. You don’t need a referral from your social care or healthcare professional if you’ve used the service for employment advice and support before. People who have a Direct Payment can use the Direct Payment and Employment helpline without a referral.
