Hate Crime Reporting

Tel: 101 (Police non-emergency)

Email: safermk@milton-keynes.gov.uk

Web: https://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/

The Home Office defines hate crime as “any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards someone based on a personal characteristic” – these include race or ethnicity, religion or beliefs, sexual orientation, disability, or transgender identity.’

Equality Council UK (ECUK) started 40 years ago in Milton Keynes as a race equality moment with the aim to eradicate racial discrimination. with the introduction of the equality act 2010 it embraced the nine protected characteristics which are:

·         Age.

·         Disability.

·         Gender reassignment.

·         Marriage and civil partnership.

·         Pregnancy and maternity.

·         Race.

·         Religion or belief.

·         Sex.

.         Sexual Orientation

ECUK operates throughout to provide information, help and support with a view to advancing equality of opportunity for all.

Hate crimes can be reported directly to the police: if not an emergency call 101, or if it is an emergency call 999.  There are also other local (e.g. MKCIL) and national organisations where crimes can be reported – these will all be displaying a Anti Hate Crime poster or sticker.

Equality Advisory Support Service (EASS)

FREEPOST,

EASS HELPLINE,

FPN6521

Tel:              0808 800 0082

Web:            www.equalityadvisoryservice.com

The Equality Advisory Support Service helpline is aimed at individuals who may need more expert advice and support on discrimination and human rights than advice agencies and other local organisations can provide.

The Equality Advisory Support Service does:

  • Give advice to individuals nationwide on all discrimination issues
  • Explain legal rights within discrimination legislations
  • Explain options for resolution and help people pursue them
  • Help people who need or want to seek legal solutions by helping them to access legal aid or other accessible legal services.

The EASS can provide support and assistance in writing letters to organisations to help resolve an issue. They may also be able to put an individual in touch with a lay advocate, depending on their needs and other criteria.

The Equality Advisory Support Service does not:

  • Provide legal advice
  • Provide representation in any legal proceedings
  • Advise on the strength of the case
  • Provide advice to solicitors and other professional advisors

The EASS works in partnership with the Royal Association for Deaf people (RAD) to make the Equality Advisory Support Service accessible to deaf and hard of hearing people.

If an individual is deaf or hard of hearing, they can contact RAD at royaldeaf.org.uk to speak to an advisor.

Language is no barrier to accessing the services – EASS is able to speak in any language a client is comfortable using.

The helpline is open 9:00am-7:00pm Monday-Friday and 10:00am-2:00pm Saturday, and is closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
