Housing for older people with disabilities in MK

The majority of Milton Keynes’ housing is in self-contained estates set away from roads, comprising a mix of housing types, a local shop, takeaway restaurant, community centre or hall, doctor’s surgery and, in some estates, a post office and pharmacy.

There are different types of accommodation available for disabled people in Milton Keynes: independent living, sheltered housing and supported housing. In addition to their own property, the council also works closely with other housing associations, some of which are listed in this section.

Anyone over the age of 16 with a housing need can apply to join the Housing Register.  There are qualification and eligibility rules such as not having savings over £16,000 and those who do need not meet the threshold of housing needs as defined in the Housing Allocations Policy.

The policy does state that the property needs to be accessible and that all the normal features can be used taking into account any medical and/or physical needs.  There is also provision for taking into account a person’s specific health needs.  Access to medical facilities and support services can also be considered provided they are essential to that person’s wellbeing.

If a property cannot be adapted to someone’s needs this will not be considered a refusal in terms of a property offer.
